General Motors Holden (GMH) yesterday announced the sale of one of Melbourne’s largest brownfield sites, and with the Ballarat West Employment Zone (BWEZ) in the middle of construction, the opportunities these two projects present are endless. The current combined amount of land available between these two large development zones is more than 97 hectares.

Earlier this year, the development of the BWEZ began with an initial 60.1 hectares. Construction has already started on the new Ballarat Airport, improving rail infrastructure and Ballarat Western Link Road (Major Projects 2014). It’s an exciting initiative from the City of Ballarat and Regional Development Victoria, and the intention is to enhance business productivity and provide top quality infrastructure.

In fact, over the next 20 years, the area will comprise 438 hectares of high quality estate with a mix of industrial, wholesale, logistics, construction and other businesses. MKM Constructions are looking forward to seeing the opportunities this opens up.

In Melbourne, a recent statement from GMH has been released, announcing the sale of one of the city’s largest brownfields on the fringe of the city (Urban Developer 2015). Brownfield refers to an urban site with the potential for building development. This site will undoubtedly be something to watch in the coming months with an expressions-of-interest campaign commencing mid-August, 2015.

The site represents 30 per cent of the total industrial zone in Port Melbourne and there have been talks of all sorts of projects. Potential opportunities include a business park, an entertainment complex, a new university campus or even an innovation and technology hub.

“This site represents a landmark opportunity to secure not only a significant industrial presence in tightly held Port Melbourne, but to acquire one of the largest city fringe brownfield footprints in Melbourne.”
