Project Overview

The result is the largest sports pavilion in Hobsons Bay. The facility features 10 change rooms including eight female-friendly and fully accessible rooms, two referee rooms, a first aid room, three community meeting spaces, two kitchens, two canteens, an undercover viewing area, and dedicated storage for each of the five tenant clubs. The broader redevelopment also delivered a 170-space car park, 4-wicket cricket practice nets, and 40-metre behind-goal netting.

Sustainability was central to the design, with 89 water tanks beneath the pavilion servicing the toilets and 57 rooftop solar panels reducing ongoing electricity costs. Architecturally, the building makes a strong statement on the Kororoit Creek Road streetscape, a contemporary façade of vertical timber screening, warm cladding tones, and layered greenery that balances visual impact with long-term practicality.

Project Success & Impact

The J.T. Gray Pavilion now serves five sporting clubs and over 1,200 members across nine soccer pitches and four cricket pitches. Barnstoneworth United Football Club, Barnstoneworth United Junior Football Club, Williamstown Soccer Club, Williamstown Congregational Cricket Club, and St Johns Cricket Club all benefit from modern, inclusive facilities that simply didn’t exist before.

The community meeting spaces also open the building to local groups beyond the sporting season — extending its impact year-round.

From the first render to final handover, MKM delivered exactly what was promised.
