Project Overview

The saleyard cover design started as a sketch on the back of an envelope. From there, MKM worked closely with CVLX and other stakeholders to develop the concept into a 30,000m² roof design, delivered on budget on a greenfield site. The design allows roof water to be harvested for use by stock below, and pens were kept clear of the roof structure itself.

A collaborative approach was taken through the design stage, working through potential construction issues with stakeholders ahead of time to support a smoother build process.

Project Success & Impact

The new roof gives protection to livestock and to the stock agents working the yards day to day. As published by Commerce Ballarat, CVLX is now the state’s largest multi-species livestock selling facility, transacting 40% of Victoria’s sheep and lambs sold through saleyards, alongside fortnightly Prime cattle sales and a monthly Store Cattle sale. The facility moves more than 50,000 head of cattle each year, generating over $380 million in livestock sales annually and contributing more than $1.2 billion to the Ballarat economy each year.

Together, the upgrade delivers a facility built to support the scale and importance of livestock trading across the region.
