Project Overview

MKM Building Group delivered the design and construction of a new roof structure over the Corowa Saleyards Precinct in NSW, covering the existing 30,000sqm yards to protect stock, staff, and visitors from extreme weather conditions.

We partnered with Central Steel Build (CSB) on the steel package design and fabrication, bringing in specialist structural expertise to keep the build cost-effective without compromising on quality. The working saleyards below and the fall of the land added complexity to the design, and this shaped decisions throughout design and construction.

Column-free spans were required in key areas so the cover wouldn’t interfere with stock movement and existing yard layouts, and clearance heights and site levels had to be worked out within tight tolerances. MKM, CSB, and the site’s civil and geotechnical engineers worked through these requirements together.

Alongside the roof structure, the project included the installation of a new water catchment system, an upgrade to the lighting system, and the installation of solar panels to reduce ongoing operating costs.

Project Success & Impact

The completed facility has significantly improved conditions for stock, staff, and visitors, with the new roof providing year-round protection from extreme weather. The saleyards can now accommodate an annual throughput of 70,000 cattle and 1.6 million sheep, improving the safe movement and handling of livestock on sale days.

The project also delivered longer-term operational benefits for the site, with the new water catchment system, lighting upgrade, and solar installation working together to reduce running costs and support more sustainable day-to-day operations.

MKM Building Group ensured the finished structure met the practical demands of a fully operational saleyards while staying within budget. The result is a facility that supports the region’s agricultural industry for years to come.
