Horsham Rural City Council invited MKM to design and construct an infrastructure upgrade at the Horsham Regional Livestock Exchange (HRLE), the major livestock selling centre in the Wimmera, drawing vendors from as far as the South Australian border and southern New South Wales.
Project Overview
Operating from the Burnt Creek Industrial Estate since 1999, HRLE is Victoria’s fourth-largest sheep and lamb market and a key part of the local economy. The upgrade delivered a fixed sawtooth modular roof across the entire 23,400m² stock yard, along with LED lighting throughout.
A 100kW rooftop solar system was installed, the maximum allowable under small-scale renewable energy market provisions, alongside 500kL of water storage built to meet fire service requirements.
Project Success & Impact
The new roof gives workers, vendors and livestock shelter across the full sale yard, lifting day-to-day conditions at one of regional Victoria’s busiest livestock markets. The solar system offsets the Exchange’s energy use, and the water storage adds a reliable on-site supply that supports both operations and site safety.
Together, the upgrade positions HRLE to keep pace with demand from vendors travelling in from across the Wimmera and beyond.
